Gênes 01

Fausto Paradivino
created the 01 june 2005

Considered one of the most brilliant Italian authors of the new generation, Fausto Paravidino is also an actor and translator (Shakespeare, Pinter). He wrote seven plays including Trincipollo, La Mallattia della Famiglia M, Genova 01 (Gênes 01) and Nuts (Peanuts, L'Arche Editeur, 2005).

The text Gênes 01, was commissioned by the Royal Court Theatre in London, and is a personal chronicle inspired by the repression of the demonstrators in July 2001 at Genoa during the G8 summit. Facts and eye witness accounts are presented in a form that recalls an ancient chorus style.
Fausto Paravidino concisely confronts the facts that led to the death of Carlo Giuliani, but also the manipulation of language and true nature of liberal ruling democracy.

Gênes 01, EXCERPT

‘Rumours a most varied nature start to go round about the identity of the deceased.
A foreigner- a wild punk-a Black Block- a druggy.
The news spreads around la Zone Rouge in Versailles.
A government vice secretary goes to Berlusconi and delivers these words : ‘Sir, the death has occurred. "
- ‘No not a death, the death. The one we were waiting for.’
- That evening , Bush smiles and declares " Genova is very nice ", we ask him if he is aware that a demonstrator has died, he assumes his sad face and confirms " Oh, yes it's tragic ".
